Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara and Indonesian Christopher Rungkat barged into the quarterfinals of the 2016 ITF (International Tennis Federation) Hong Kong Futures 2 doubles event being held at the Victoria Park Tennis Courts.
The second-seeded pair of Alcantara and Rungkat needed less than an hour to oust the unheralded tandem of Hung Jui-Chen and Wang Chieh-Fu of Taiwan, 7-5, 6-3, in the opening round.
“It was a great start for us and we’re hoping to continue our winning ways in the coming games,” said Alcantara, a former Australian Open juniors doubles champion.
Alcantara and Rungkat arranged a quarterfinal showdown with Russians Aleksandr Malyshev and Maksim Malyshev, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Hong Kong bets Anthony Jackie Tang and Pak Long Yeung.
Alcantara was scheduled to play in the singles event against Sami Reinwein of Germany in the first round on Wednesday but was delayed due to inclement weather condition.
It was a different story for Jeson Patrombon as he bowed out of contention both in singles and doubles.
The 23-year-old Patrombon, a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open juniors, succumbed to second pick Dayne Kelly of Australian in the first round, 2-6, 2-6.
Patrombon and Taiwanese partner Yi Chu-Huan then lost to the Japanese duo Shintaro Imai and Arata Onozawa, 5-7, 3-6.
Meanwhile, Alberto Lim Jr. is now ranked 19th in the ITF world juniors standings.
He earned additional 120 points for his runner-up finish in Asian ITF Pune Open Junior Tennis Championship in India and 75 points for reaching the second round of the French Open juniors championships.
