A photo of Emmy award-winning TV host Ellen Degeneres holding up a supposed invite, via fan sign, to her world famous show for popular Filipino love team AlDub circulated online this week.
As it caused a frenzy among fans and an excited downpour of congratulatory messages online, The Manila Times took a closer look at the Degeneres photo, and after some research, verified the fan sign to have originally carried the American celebrity’s birthday greeting for British singer Sam Smith.
Photoshopped as the invite may be, it is quite understandable why many believed the invite to be true. For no one can deny that #Aldub— an amalgam for Alden Alden Richards and Yaya Dub (Maine Mendoza) of Eat Bulaga’s phenomenal “Kalyeserye” —has gone beyond its accidental beginnings at Broadway Centrum, Quezon City where the daily noontime show is televised.
From AlDub Nation, the record breaking Tweets the pair has spawned in just two short months come all the way from Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, California USA, Dubai to Italy, among many other countries. And it is a fact The Ellen Degeneres Show is partial to inviting internet phenomena, many of whom have come from the Philippines including Charice, Rhap Salazar, Zendee Rose Terenefe and cousins Aldrich Talonding and James Bucong, to name a few.
Perhaps not just now, but if #AlDub keeps up its staggering numbers on the World Wide Web, the Philippines’ most popular celebrities today may just be fan signing and dubsmashing across The Ellen Degeneres Show one day soon.
