• Altas pummel Letran in NCAA men’s volley

Defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta overpowered Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20, to jump into a three-way tie for second place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 92 men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Esmail Kasim unloaded a team-best 11 hits while Rey Taneo, Jr. scattered 10 points to help propel the Altas to their fourth win in five outings, which was good to snare it a piece of No. 2 with College of St. Benilde and San Beda College.

Allan Jay Sala-an, team captain Manuel Doliente and John Patrick Ramos chipped in a combined 24 points to help provide the Las Pinas-school an added attacking option.

It was Perpetual Help’s third win in row after it fell to San Beda in a heartbreaking 25-18, 29-27, 23-25, 27-29, 10-15 loss on November 20.

“We didn’t let that loss affect us because we’re focused on making it to the Final Four,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.

    Letran skidded to 1-4 (win-loss).

In juniors’ action, reigning titlist Perpetual Help survived Letran’s upset try with a 21-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-14 win to remain at No. 3 with a 3-1 mark.

Emilio Aguinaldo and Lyceum of the Philippines University lead the way with a 4-0 and a 3-0 record, respectively.

In women’s play, Perpetual Help edged Letran, 29-27, 25-15, 25-21, to improve to 3-2 and close in on barging into the magic four.
