• Ambushed policemen in Cagayan identified

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday identified the six policemen from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) who died in an ambush by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Cagayan on Tuesday.

Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, named the slain RPSB members as Police Officers 1 Derel Pillos Sunico, Ryan Gaspar Annang, Arjay Allauigan Batusta, Rogelio Carag Alfonso, Julius Nitura Soriano, and Jaypee Pedroso.

The victims were with 63 RPSB personnel, led by Supt. Juan Aggasid, who were dispatched to Barangay Santa Margarita in Baggao to check on the reported burning of government equipment by the NPA rebels.

However, their vehicles hit a landmine and were fired upon with grenades by the rebels on stake out some three kilometers away from the burning site. The team engaged the rebels in a five-hour gun battle until reinforcements arrived.

Mayor said the 10 wounded policemen who are now confined at the Guzman Medical Center in Tuguegarao City were given Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting and P10,000 assistance each.

    1. PNP is no match to the NPA, especially in that part of Cagayan. There should be an Army Ranger or a Scout Ranger Detachment or unit in that area to maintain peace and order. These Army soldiers are more proficient in combat tactics, and their survivability chances during the engagements are far better than the PNP.

In Bohol province, there is an Army Ranger Battalion located in the middle of the island, to deter NPA activities. The presence of an Army Unit in any areas that the NPA operates freely will be reduced because NPA elements do not want to engage with these soldiers, and eventually leave the area.

Soldiers in general, were trained in combat tactics, and have a better survival chances when they engaged with the NPA. The bottom line is –Do not send policemen to engage with the NPA, because there will be a lot of casualties on the side of the PNP. Combat tactics is like playing a chess game, and you must outmaneuver your opponent all the way to the end. In combat, live bullets are flying all over the place.
