Former world champion Rubilen Amit won a bronze medal for the Philippines in the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2013 billiards and snooker competitions at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon, South Korea.
Amit finished third in the women’s 10-ball event topped by Cha Yu Ram of South Korea. Chihiro Kawahara of Japan got the silver medal.
Amit ousted Tan Ho Yun of Taiwan in the first round, 7-3; Indira Thamme Gowda of Independent Olympic Athletes in the second round, 7-0; and Fathrah Masum of Indonesia in the quarterfinals, 7-3; but fell short against Cha in the semifinals, 3-7, to settle for bronze.
Reigning Southeast Asian Games 9-ball and 8-ball champion Iris Ranola failed to advance to the medal round after losing to Shu Wah Hoe of Singapore in the second round, 6-7.
Amit and Ranola will be gunning for medal in the 9-ball event beginning on Thursday night. Amit battles Fu Xiaofang of China while Ranola takes on Nguyen Huynh Thi Ngoc of Vietnam in their respective first-round matches.
In chess, Janelle Mae Frayna placed seventh overall with 4.5 points in the women’s standard event. Woman International Master Catherine Perena finished 23rd with 3.5 points. Woman Grandmaster (GM) Hou Yifan of China grabbed the gold with 6.5 points.
GM Mark Paragua ended up 12th with 4.5 points while GM Oliver Barbosa finished 14th with four points in the men’s standard class. Chinese Yu Yangyi took the gold with 6.5 points.
