SYDNEY: Amnesty International on Tuesday called for an independent investigation into the killing of 17 prisoners who broke out of a jail in Papua New Guinea, voicing alarm at the gunning down of unarmed people.

The men were shot dead after a mass breakout by inmates from the Buimo jail in the Pacific nation’s second largest city of Lae on Friday, police said.
