The National Power Corp. (Napocor) announced on Monday that it will release water from Angat Dam today, Tuesday, to maintain its stability and bring down the reservoir’s elevation to safe levels.
The dam’s spillway gate will be opened initially at 0.5 meter at 8 a.m. to discharge water at an estimated 68 cubic meters per second.
The spillway gate needs to be opened to release water that accumulated in Angat reservoir due to continuous rains brought by the prevailing Northeast monsoon that is affecting Northern and Central Luzon.
Angat dam has now reached 213.90 meters above sea level (masl). It has a normal high water level of 212 masl.
Napocor said it has advised people downstream of the dam to be alert and take necessary precautions.
Napocor’s Flood Operation Manager Teresa Serra said in a statement that the release of water will not cause flooding downstream.
“It will have minimal effect on Matictic River in Norzagaray and no effect at all on other rivers,” Serra added.
