Two ABS-CBN leading ladies are the opening showbiz headliners of the year as they respectively announced their first major projects for 2014.
While several other actors and singers have also made public their career coups and moves, these two beauties emerged as big stories of The Week That Was in local showbiz, Anne Curtis because of her “comeback” of sorts; and Kim Chiu, with what many perceive to be startling changes in her sweet persona.
On Thursday, ABS-CBN and Dreamscape had the entertainment press rushing to the ELJ Building in Quezon City after a last-minute invitation was issued for “a very important announcement.”
The announcement was Anne Curtis’ return to the prime time block in the highly coveted role of Dyesebel. Aside from joining an elite group of actresses that have given life to Mars Ravelo’s iconic mermaid—among them Vilma Santos, Alma Moreno, Alice Dixson, Charlene Gonzales and Marian Rivera—Anne was very emotional at the big reveal especially since she apparently emerged as the public’s choice to portray the role after a marketing survey was conducted. This, despite the image crisis she suffered in December 2013, when reports of her drunken meltdown at a swanky Fort Bonifacio bar exploded in the tri-media.
Teary-eyed, and without specifically addressing the issue in her first press conference following the brouhaha, she gushed, “It’s another dream come true. Sobra lang akong speechless kasi napakalaking project ito. Sinasabi ko noon sa interviews dati, dream role ko ang Dyesebel. So ito na, 2014, a great way to start the year.”
Presented with Anne at the announcement were her leading men Sam Milby and Gerald Anderson. Stunning in a flowing emerald green dress, Anne promised to give the project beyond her best, signaling a fresh start from her brief troubles.
“Gusto ko lang maging magaling na Dyesebel. Gagawin ko lahat, magaaral ako ng fin swimming para maging ibang level na Dyesebel,” she swore.
In her Twitter account, where she also issued an apology to her fans for her behaviour in December, Anne later posted, “Thank you for all the Congratulatory messages. Thank you for keeping the Faith my sweethearts. I promise to do my best as YOUR Dyesebel.’
But while Anne made a very positive splash late in the week, the same—unfortunately—cannot be said of fellow ABS-CBN artist Kim Chiu on Tuesday. Although the press conference for her upcoming Star Cinema rom-com with Xian Lim, Bride for Rent, started out in a jovial mood—the gathering being the first major entertainment news conference of the year—she managed to offend veteran showbiz journalist Aster Amoyo with a curt reply to a very usual “artista” question. When Amoyo asked Kim the real score between her and her leading man Xian, she replied, “I don’t owe you an explanation.”
Long considered as a sweet girl in the business what with her small town ways from Cebu, the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition winner, as another writer observed early on in the press conference, seems to have shed her erstwhile image. Her role in Bride for Rent is quite loud and aggressive, and, as the same writer noted, she seems to be dressing in a more daring way nowadays.
Answering appropriately, Kim said, “Almost 24 years old na naman po ako and hindi na po siguro bagay yung dating pa-sweet-sweet. Bagay naman po siguro sa age ko ang pananamit na ito,” she said of a sleek, teal tube dress. As for her role in Bride for Rent—a poor girl so desperate for money she agrees to pretend to be Xian’s wife—she remarked, “Very challenging po ang role ni Rocky. Hindi mahinhin, agresibo at palaban. Ang challenge ko po dito ay mas lalo pang maging komedyante at maging extra funny.”
Kim also gamely answered questions that were derived from the movie’s wedding theme, like whether she found Xian as husband material, and how well they got along on set. Her responses were very positive, which is why it is very curious why she uttered such an unexpected reply to an everyday showbiz question, which could have simply been answered with the generic, “We’re just friends.”
In an ABS-CBN.Com news report, she explained, “Nag sorry naman ako agad. Siguro na mis-interpret lang. Siguro may mga bagay na kapag inuulit-ulit… Ikaw, kapag tinanong kita nang paulit-ulit tapos ang sagot ko ulit-ulit din. Magagalit ka kasi ulit-ulit lang rin ‘yung sagot ko.”
She also admitted she felt like “her world would crumble” after the incident went viral on the Web, but found comfort in the support of her fans.
Much as Kim insists she meant no disrespect with her reply, perhaps she should take a moment to consider that as a celebrity, she cannot avoid such repetitive questions, and that there are other ways to handle them without offending others. That’s why a huge part of showbiz is called “Public Relations.”
While things seem to have settled for the time being, Kim should take Anne’s lead in handling the issue. Be humble and keep quiet.
Bride for Rent opens in cinemas on January 15.
