Monica Therese Cruz is the latest local casualty in the girls’ singles to drop out in the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Championships on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
Cruz lost to No. 13 Maddison Inglis of Australia, 2-6, 1-6, in the second round of the Grade 1 tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation. Cruz earned an opening round bye.
Six other Filipinas – Roxanne Resma, Frances Santiago, Jana Marie Pages, Angela Sunga, Khim Iglupas and Andrea Nicole Amistad – lost to their respective foes in the first round on Tuesday.
Yukina Saigo of Japan trounced Resma, 6-1, 6-1; Chinese Wei Zhanlan ousted Santiago, 6-1, 6-1; Australian Chloe Hule blasted Pages, 6-1, 6-4; Thai Bunyawi Thamchaiwat clobbered Sunga, 6-1, 6-2; Thai Tamachan Momkoonthod survived Iglupas, 6-0, 7-6 (2); and Taiwanese Ma Yi-Chi overpowered Amistad, 6-0, 6-2.
Maia Bernadette Balce and Chrislyn Sioson are the two remaining local netters. They were scheduled to play on Wednesday, with Balce facing No. 15 American Raveena Kingsley and Sioson meeting No. 2 Greetje Minnen of Belgium.
