Unheralded Mario Fernandez made his presence felt in the AIBA (International Boxing Association) World Elite Men’s Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The Filipino scored a 3-0 unanimous win over Imran Khan of Guyana in their first-round meeting in the bantamweight event.
Fernandez will have his hands full in the next round, when he goes up against fourth seed Shiva Thapa of India, who secured an opening-game bye.
The Fernandez-Shiva match is scheduled on Saturday night.
Fernandez joined his teammates Roldan Boncales and London Olympic games veteran Mark Anthony Barriga in the second round of the tournament where more than 400 boxers from 100 countries are participating.
The flyweight Boncales faces North Korean Ri Chung Il, who earned a first-round bye. Boncales earlier defeated Beijing Olympian Eddie Barillas of Guatemala.
Barriga trounced 2011 SEA Games silver medalist Ngoc Huynh of Vietnam in the light-flyweight division to arrange a meeting with World Boxing Series campaigner Yosvani Veitia Soto of Cuba, the number five seed in the tournament.
On Wednesday, Indonesia Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Dennis Galva, the fourth member of the national team, lost to 10th seed Gaybatullah Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan in the light welterweight class.
