COTABATO CITY, Maguindanao: Another suspect in the infamous Maguindanao massacre with P250,000 reward on his head was arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP) intelligence agents in Sarangani province on Tuesday morning.
Denga Mentol alias Tho Cario Opong, was collared after a week before the commemoration of the most gruesome murder in history in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) which victims include 32 journalists on November 23, 2009.
Supt. Romeo Galgo, Police Regional Office 12 public information officer, said Mentol was arrested by a joint police team in an operation in Sitio Kabangkalan, Barangay Batotuling in Glan town at around 4:25 a.m. on Tuesday.
He said Mentol is a member of the Civilian Volunteer Organization in Maguindanao who directly figured in the massacre and among the original 189 suspects charged in connection with the killings.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier placed a P250,000 reward for the arrest of Mentol of Barangay Iganagampong, Datu Unsay town in Maguindanao. The same town where the principal suspect Datu Andal “Unsay” Ampatuan, Jr., was then municipal mayor.
Mentol is detained at Alabel municipal police station while awaiting transfer to Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City to join the rest of the suspects.
Meanwhile, Mentol’s arrest is a welcome news to the families of the 58 victims who were brutally killed by the suspects related to the Ampatuans.
Hope Teodoro, son of Andy Teodoro who was among the 32 journalists killed, told The Manila Times they are happy with the arrest of Mentol. He also called on President Aquino 3rd to make good his promise for the conviction of the suspects before he steps down from office in 2016.
The elder Teodoro was the Sultan Kudarat News Bureau Chief of the Mindanao Inquirer before the massacre.
