Anti-abuse program for the elderly launched in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY: A pilot program for expanded protection of the elderly and senior citizens dubbed ReSPPEC or Reporting System and Prevention Program for Elder Abuse Cases was recently launched in the central town of Lambunao, Iloilo. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VI is the lead implementing agency.

DSWD Regional Dir. Rebecca Geamala said that abuse often starts when the elderly have dementia and roam around places. A memorandum of agreement was entered into by the municipal government headed by Mayor Reynor Gonzales and DSWD for the implementation of the project. DSWD will provide the technical assistance as well as allocate funds. Lambunao, on the other hand, will have a local reporting mechanism and referral network in the management of elder abuse cases, to utilize a database and information system for the cases. Other pilot areas include San Carlos in Pangasinan; Maco in Compostela Valley; and Valenzuela City in the National Capital Region.
