A police officer was shot dead inside a cockpit arena in San Juan City (Metro Manila) on Wednesday night.
Sr. Supt. Joselito Pajarillaga, officer in charge of the San Juan police, identified the slain policeman as Senior Police Officer 2 Abundio Panes.
Initial investigation showed the victim was shot at about 8:45 a.m. while conducting surveillance with the help of a police asset, inside the San Juan Cockpit Arena on F. Manalo Street.
The target drug suspect, identified as Manuel Obar or “Manoling,” and said to be operating in Barangay Batis, tried to escape and was chased by the policeman. The two exchanged fire.
The policeman, who had several gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The suspect, who also sustained gunshot wounds, was brought to the San Juan Medical Center.
It was not clear, however, who really killed the policeman because there was a witness who claimed that a cockpit security guard, identified as Louie Magdag, was the one who fired shots at the victim, Pajarillaga said.
Pajarillaga noted that the cockpit gate was closed when the policeman chased the suspect.
The security guard, who is now in hiding, will be questioned, he said.
