ANTIPOLO City was named national champion in Ecological Waste Management, besting other local government units (LGUs) nationwide in the implementation of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. A P1 million cash award was also given to the city. Marikina City, last year’s titleholder, came in second and Balanga City in Bataan placed third. Manila BAYani was launched in 2014, covering LGUs in the Manila Bay area from Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and the National Capital Region. It aims to intensify the implementation of the Supreme Court mandamus for the rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of Manila Bay. It also reviews the commitment of LGUs to the Environmental Compliance Audit, a tool the Department of Interior and Local Government developed to evaluate the implementation and compliance to Republic Act 9003 in the city and barangay (village) level.
