Apayao town mayor, bodyguard killed in car crash


TABUK CITY: A town mayor in Apayao and her bodyguard were killed when their car crashed after trying to avoid a carabao crossing the road in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, early Saturday morning.

Luna Mayor Beti Bersola and her bodyguard, Marlon Tacliban, when their Montero Sports car slammed into a tree on the roadside, police reported.

The driver, Jun Ildefonso, veered hard when a carabao suddenly appeared on the road in Sitio Mabiga in Barangay Pasaleng about 1:20 a.m., according to Supt. Jeffrey Gorospe, Ilocos Norte police spokesperson.

Bersola died on the spot, while Tacliban did not make to the hospital alive.

Also being treated at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Batac City were Josephine Bangsil, the vice mayor, the driver and Milette Agustin.

The group was on their way home to Luna from Baguio City when the incident occurred.
