After hours of meeting, President Benigno Aquino 3rd and his Cabinet on Thursday approved seven infrastructure projects worth more than P100 billion, including the construction of a common station that would link Metro Manila’s two overhead train services near the Trinoma mall in Quezon City.
Approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) board chaired by President Benigno Aquino 3rd were the P62.7-billion Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT 7) project; P64.9-billion Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) South Extension Project; and the P1.4-billion LRT Line 1 North Extension Project.
At present, LRT 1 runs from Baclaran to Roosevelt in Quezon City, while the MRT 3 runs from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City.
The planned MRT 7 will begin at Tala, Caloocan City, passing through Lagro and Fairview, Novaliches, Batasan, Diliman, Philcoa, before ending at Edsa corner North Avenue. The railway will serve an estimated two million commuters in the northern parts of Quezon and Caloocan cities. This project will cover 14 stations.
The rest of the approved projects were the P17.5-billion Mactan-Cebu International Airport New Passenger Terminal Project; P7.7-billion Development of Transportation System at the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) and Philippine Reclamation Area (PRA); P 5.6-billion Department of Health Modernization of the Philippine Orthopedic Center; and P 24.4-billion Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Bulacan Bulk Water Supply Project.
The Development of Transportation System at the FTI and PRA properties will be undertaken under the public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.
The NEDA said that the project includes the development of two mass transportation terminals at the Southern outskirts of Metro Manila. The first is the South Luzon Expressway Terminal at the FTI Property in Taguig City. That system will serve passengers traveling to and from Laguna and Batangas.
The other terminal is the Coastal Road Terminal at the PRA property beside Asiaworld/Uniwide along Manila-Cavite Expressway Expressway in Parañaque City. It will serve passengers traveling to and from Cavite.
