President Benigno Aquino 3rd flew to Zamboanga City Friday morning to assess the crisis there with concerned government agencies, a Malacanang official said.
Strategic Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang the President left Manila at 7:30 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Zamboanga at 10 a.m.
“The decision to leave was made last night upon discussion with people on the ground,” Carandang said.
Fighters from the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) descended on Zamboanga on Monday and occupied at least four barangays in the city. The rebels are holding several civilians hostage.
