President Benigno Aquino 3rd has signed into law a measure establishing reforms in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), Malacañang said Tuesday.
Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma said Aquino signed Republic Act 10742 or the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015 on January 15.
“The SK reform law seeks to strengthen and empower the SK and transform it into a useful conduit for youth involvement in community development,” Coloma said.
The new law broadens the age limit in SK participation to 24 years old, with the minimum age of 18 years old. The current age requirement is 15 to 18 years old.
RA 10742 states that an SK official must not be related within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity to any incumbent elected national official or to any incumbent elected regional, provincial, city, municipal, or barangay official, in the locality where he seeks to be elected.
