• Aquino still hopes to get married

DAVAO CITY: Despite his failed relationships in the past, President Benigno Aquino 3rd still wants to get married.

The country’s first bachelor President on Monday said he was “honored” to be the best man, not as a godparent, in the upcoming wedding of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero and actress Heart Evangelista.

“As to being the best man siyempre [of course]I’m honored, but also I’m relieved that I wasn’t made ninong [godfather],” Aquino told reporters in an interview.

He explained that it was a taboo for single people to be called on as principal sponsor in weddings since it would make them less likely to find a partner in life.

“Hope springs eternal. We have a belief that single people who become godparents will remain single for the rest of their lives,” the President said.

“To avoid that possibility, in case that exists, I said that I was even willing to become secondary sponsor,” he added.

The President even quipped that he was willing to be a ring bearer during the Escudero-Evangelista nuptials, just to avoid being a godparent.

But kidding aside, Aquino said Escudero was a “very good friend” of his and that they have been through a lot since they both started as congressmen in 1998.

“We are looking forward to it being a joyous occasion and the start of real happiness for both,” he added.

Aquino, since being elected President in 2010, has long been teased about his status as a bachelor.

When asked when he plans to get married, the President just said, “It’s sooner tomorrow than yesterday.”

Aquino tries to keep his social life private. His last reported love interest was a lawyer from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The President was earlier linked to former Valenzuela City (Metro Manila) Councilor Shalani Soledad, designer Liz Uy and television host Grace Lee.

Meanwhile, Aquino also confirmed that he had been invited to the wedding of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, but according to him he will be just be attending as a guest.

“They’ve been very supportive, both of them, and they really seem to be happy. So I really hope that it continues for the rest of their lives,” he said.
