• Aquino still trusts Binay – Palace

Vice President Jejomar Binay still enjoys the trust and confidence of President Benigno Aquino 3rd, a Malacañang official on Sunday said as the Palace doused calls for the resignation of the official for his supposed “two-faced attacks” against the administration party.

Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that Aquino remains confident of Binay’s loyalty amid accusations lodged against him by Caloocan     Rep. Edgar Erice.

“Hangga’t walang partikular na pahiwatig o pahayag ang Pangulo, meron siyang pagtitiwala o kumpiyansa sa mga miyembro ng kanyang Gabinete at kabilang diyan si Vice President Binay [Until there is a particular statement from the President, he has trust and confidence in his cabinet members, including Vice President Binay],” Coloma told government-run dzRB radio.

Coloma, however, noted that Erice has the right to express his opinions especially since he made the said statements during a privilege speech in the House of Representatives.

Erice, a member of the Liberal Party (LP), earlier asked Binay to resign from the Cabinet and show his true colors as an opposition stalwart.

The lawmaker, moreover, challenged Binay to undergo a loyalty check by asking his family and allies to stop “maligning” the LP, which is chaired by Aquino.

“If he is a true ally of the Aquino administration, he should order his children and party mates to stop their attacks against Malacañang and President Aquino’s party mates. But if he is a true leader of the opposition, he should immediately resign from the Cabinet so that he could continue hitting the mistakes made by the Aquino administration and the Liberal Party,” Erice said.

“It is about time for Vice President Binay to show his true colors and stop [being a two-timer]. Is he an ally of the administration or the head of the opposition?” Erice asked.

He also noted that Binay’s daughter, Rep. Abigail Binay of Makati City, and his United Nationalist Alliance party were part of the LP-led     majority bloc in the House of Representatives.Asked if Malacañang will ask Erice to stop, Coloma said: “Basta po ang ginagamit niya ay privilege speech, ano, ito po ay personal na karapatan ng bawat mambabatas. May accountability po siya sa kanyang mga sariling constituents [As long as he uses his privilege speech, this is a personal right of a lawmaker. He is accountable to his constituents].”As early as 2011, Binay had already publicized his intention to run for the presidency during the 2016 polls.

Apart from his duties as vice president, Binay serves as chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council as well as presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers concerns.
