PRESIDENT AQUINO will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the opening of the 34th Aseanapol Conference to be hosted by The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday at the at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.
The President will address the heads of delegation from 10 Aseanapol -member countries and nine observer delegations and dialogue partners. The Aseanapol , founded in Manila in 1981, convenes annually to discuss regional concerns over transnational crime affecting Asean-member states.
Terrorism, illegal drugs and human trafficking, maritime, commercial and credit card fraud, fake travel documents and transnational crime are on the conference agenda. At the end of the four-day conference, the Aseanapol will draft and ratify a joint communiqué to set the direction of future activities.
PNP Director General Alan Purisima said the 34th Aseanapol will further strengthen ties among ASEAN police agencies for the enhancement of mutual cooperation and collaboration and it marks a homecoming for member-nations to the association’s place of origin. The PNP had hosted three annual conferences in 1987, 1993 and 2003.
Purisima added the conference was an opportunity for the Asean law enforcement community to join hands against cybercrime. He said the PNP gained headway recently as a result of Case Operation Plan “Strikeback,” initiated by the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group in cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.
The Aseanapol was established to serve as a coordination and communication mechanism for interaction; to foster mutual assistance and cooperation; and to increase regional cooperation against transnational crime.
