PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino 3rd will name the standard bearer of the Liberal Party (LP) for 2016 this week, Senate president Franklin Drilon said Monday.
But he said Aquino will not announce the ruling party’s bet for vice president because he or she will be chosen by the standard bearer.
“We have not discussed it (vice president) because we’re just concentrating on the presidency. The vice presidency will be a matter that we leave to the judgment and choice of the presidential candidate,” Drilon said.
When asked if the running mate of the LP standard bearer will also come from LP, Drilon said the matter will be left to the discretion of their presidential candidate.
Drilon did not mention any name but Interior Secretary Mar Roxas is deemed the presumptive standard bearer of LP.
At the House of Representatives, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. said majority of LP members in the chamber will likely throw their support behind Aquino’s chosen presidential candidate.
“There are so many LP members here, about 120… it would be presumptuous for me to speak for all of them. But I think a great majority of them, if not all, will abide by the President’s decision,” Belmonte, the Vice Chairman of the ruling LP, said.
While Roxas is the presumptive candidate, Aquino has repeatedly met with Senators Grace Poe and Francis Escudero. Poe, a neophyte senator and former censors chief, has been leading in presidential and vice presidential surveys.
The LP has booked the historic Club Filipino in San Juan for July 28 to 31, fueling speculations that the President will announce his preferred successor this week.
It was in Club Filipino where the President’s mother, Corazon Aquino, took her oath as President in 1986.
