ILOILO CITY: President Benigno Aquino 3rd has asked Secretary Gregory Domingo to stay on as head of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) until after the country has hosted the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit this November.
Speaking to reporters, Aquino acknowledged the sacrifices government officials endure in the course of public service and that he understood why some would want to return to the private sector.
He said Domingo had long expressed his wish to return to the private sector.
“I’m grateful to Secretary Domingo for allowing himself in the past to be prevailed upon and extend his stay, especially as we’re hosting APEC this year,” Aquino said.
“So, we still haven’t agreed on any definite date for his resignation but I hope that he won’t leave us while we still have a great need for his service,” he added.
Aquino said he and Domingo will talk later this week to decide on the effective date of his resignation.
“We’ll talk sometime this week. He has submitted his resignation but the effective date is still not set. Maybe he will finish APEC first. Maybe he will stay on until the end of the year,” Aquino said.
The President thanked Domingo for his service and having led the 600 percent expansion in direct investment in the country during his tenure so far.
“Our APEC hosting and so many other things have happened under his watch in DTI,” Aquino added.
