Archer Ty wins 2 golds in BPinoy-Luzon Leg


NAGA City: William Henderson Ty of Pangasinan won two goldmedals in archery on Thursday in the 2014 Batang Pinoy-Luzon Leg at the Metro Naga City Sports Complex in Barangay Pacol here.

The 15-year-old Ty, a fourth year high school student of Tayug National High School, scored 313 points to rule the cadet boys’ 13-meter competition. Baguio City’s Jhoon Rhee Hongitan finished second with 312 points while Joshua Pajie Soriano also of Pangasinan third with 312 points.

Ty, who also won two golds in the same Luzon qualifying leg in Zambales in 2013, came back some two hours later to win the 50-meter event with 279 points. Finishing second and third respectively were his teammate Mark Danyael Campos (269) and Edgar  Cedric Mendoza of Baguio City (241).

“Last year, I wasn’t able to compete in the national finals in Iloilo City because of a typhoon. Hopefully, this year I would be able to go to Bacolod and compete with other promising archers from other regions. I prepared hard for this competition and I will prepare harder for the finals,” said Ty.

The other outstanding archers were Hongitan of Baguio, who dominated the 60-meter event with 298 points, Ziem Zibelle Balangue who won the gold in the cub girls’ 20-meter event, Clenard Hidalgo who ruled the cub boys 20-meter and Arrianne Jaiden Magarro that ruled the cub girls’ 30-meter contest.

Pasay City’s Pacifico Aranas won the cub boys’ 30-meter event with 337 points, Angelica Aldea also of Pangasinan bagged the gold in the cadet girls’ 30-meter competition with 303 points while Maria Alexea Apigo of La Union made her mark in the cadet girls’ 40-meter event.

In weightlifting, Jamil Joseph Sebastian lifted a total of 102-kilogram (45 in the snatch and 57 in the clean and jerk) to win the gold medal in the 46-kilogram category, He expressed his intention to follow the footsteps of his father, the late Jaime Sebastian, a longtime Southeast Asian Games weightlifting champion.
