Coaches Juno Sauler of De La Salle University and Pido Jarencio of University of Santo Tomas (UST) announced that their wards would not watch the National Basketball Association (NBA) Preseason game between the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers at the Mall of Asia Arena on Thursday so they can prepare without distractions for the sudden-death Game 3 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball finals.
“The players need to concentrate more in our game on Saturday and we should not be distracted,” said rookie La Salle mentor Juno Sauler during the Philippine Sportswriters Association weekly forum on Tuesday at the Philippine Sports Commission conference room.
“I remember when LeBron James came here, we were invited to go to the event but we just went on with our practice. So we didn’t [go]. We will just practice this week.”
Game 3 is set also at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday—three days after the NBA preseason game.
Jarencio, for his part, said the Growling Tigers have no time to attend the event. “All the players are staying in a dorm and there’s no time for us to watch. We will have a practice in the morning and afternoon.”
He also joked that his players might try to imitate the fancy moves of NBA players Jeremy Lin, James Harden of the Rockets and Roy Hibbert and Paul George of the Pacers, among others, which might spell disaster during the crucial game.
“In fact, I have a sabong [cockfight]during that day but I won’t go,” concluded Jarencio lightheartedly.
