Arellano tops Qatar Rapid Open Chess tilt


Filipino chess master Robert Arellano went undefeated in seven games to rule the 2013 Ramadan Rapid Open Chess Tournament held at the Girls Chess Club Abu Hamour in Doha, Qatar.

Arellano, a former University of Santo Tomas standout, outclassed Shatrughan Jha of India in the final round to wrap up the tournament with a perfect seven-point output. He pocketed the 3,000 Qatari Riyal top purse.

In the early rounds, Arellano nipped compatriot Edgar Allan Hoe (first round), Amvar Kassim of India (second round), Ahmed Batah of Syria (third round), Tareg Al Qadi of Egypt (fourth round), Yasser Aishawaffa of Syria (fifth round) and Ahmed Hamed of Egypt (sixth round).

Another Filipino, Rolenson Loyola completed the country’s domination as he finished second overall with six points. He took the 2,000 Qatari Riyal runner-up prize.

Hamed and Indian Jha Shat-rughan shared the third spot with 5.5 points each while Aishawaffa, Kassim, and Filipinos Florian de Joya, Khadafy Yahiya and Salvador Imbuido were tied for fifth place with five points apiece.

Players from the Philippines, Qatar, India, Egypt, Syria, Somalia and Indonesia were among the participants in the seven-round tournament.
