Armed men snatch 2 soldiers, 3 health workers in Agusan del Sur

THREE health workers and two soldiers were abducted by armed men believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in two separate incidents last Wednesday in Agusan del Sur, a police report said Friday.

The reports identified the health workers as Arian Bagom, Judith Carlos and Roel Omak, all of the San Luis PhilHealth office in San Luis town.

The abducted soldiers were identified as Cpl. Salman Mabbas and Pfc. Genovic Ticling of the Army’s 23rd Infantry Battalion of the 401st Infantry Brigade.

The reports said the Ticling and the health workers were taken away by a heavily armed group Wednesday morning on Km 55 in Barangay Biniclan, San Luis town.

An hour later, Mabbas, the assistant commander of the Army detachment in Biniclan, was snatched by armed men on Km 26 in Barangay Mahayahay also in San Luis.

The report said the group that abducted the soldiers and health workers were led by Armando Rabanes, alias “Anton,” and Almie Asalan, alias “Aguila.”

Troops from the 23rd Infantry Battalion are pursuing the armed group, while police in San Luis and nearby towns have set up checkpoints to block their escape, the report said.
