Army engineers in Zamboanga reconstruction

MILITARY engineers will be deployed to help in the formidable challenged reconstruction and rehabilitation of areas in Zamboanga City affected by the three-week conflict between government forces and members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, in a speech before members of the 51st Engineer Brigade, said that Army engineers are now “confronted with a formidable challenge” of helping restore the affected areas of the recent MNLF siege.

“This new deployment of our AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] engineers is aimed to restore the physical deva-stations and damages in the ground zero of the concluded armed confrontations between the government and MNLF forces,” Gazmin said.

According to Gazmin, Army engineers will be deployed to about 40 hectares of land covering Barangay Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara, Rio Hondo and adjacent areas, which were practically leveled to the ground as a result of the conflict.

He said that AFP engineers primarily assist the government in its developmental endea-vors in the different areas of the country., adding that the brigade’s capability is instrumental in the government’s reliance on our military establishment in providing engineering support and assistance in nation-building.
