Brig. Gen. Daniel A. Lucero, commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division and former spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, died after scuba diving Sunday afternoon, a report reaching The Manila Times said.
There were no other details but radio reports said Lucero was diving in Zamboanga del Sur.
The general is said to have collapsed after the dive and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Lucero commanded the 103rd Infantry Brigade in Lanao del Sur province before he was promoted to brigadier general last year and took over the 1st ID.
He was spokesperson of the Southern Command in Zamboanga City in 2002, and was appointed chief of the AFP’s Public Information Office the following year.
He was named one of “The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers” in 2011.
Lucero graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1983.
