Philippine Army opened their championship campaign in the Shakey’s V-League with a win against strong contender PLDT Home Ultera at the San Juan Arena on Thursday.
The volleybelles of Army finally booked a win against PLDT after two games in the elimination round and a game in the semifinals behind the prowess of Denden Santiago-Manabat, who tallied 16 points out of 54 attempts.
Meanwhile, PLDT Home Ultera banked on the spiking expertise of Alyssa Valdez, Gretchel Soltones and Jaja Santiago early in the game, to post a 25-13 win in the opening set of the highly anticipated match.
Army, on the other hand, came back with a vengeance as Jovelyn Gonzaga pulled off a drop ball to give her team the second set, 25-23.
The rival clubs went head-to-head in the thriller third set but Army outsmarted Home Ultera with their solid blocking en route to a 27-25 win.
Army sustained their winning momentum ruling the fourth set, 25-25, for their first victory in the finals.
In the other match, the Cagayan Valley Lady Rising Suns defeated Meralco 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23, in their knockout battle for third place earlier in the day.
Ex-San Beda College volleybelle Janine Marciano shined in their side’s dominant display of skill, grabbing 17 points off 12 spikes.
