Powerhouse Philippine Army dealt Philippine Navy another severe beating, posting an easy 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 victory to inch closer to league leading Cagayan Province in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City on Sunday.
The Army Women drew another stellar game from Lovelynn Gonzaga, who fired 11 hits after a 16-point performance against Air Force last week, while former league Most Valuable Player Nene Bautista also scored 11 hits —all on attacks —to put out Navy’s token challenge in 69 minutes.
It was Army’s second straight three-set win, putting it right behind the 3-0 Cagayan, which is playing Meralco at presstime, while inflicting Navy its second straight setback in the league sponsored by Shakey’s and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
Besides unloading eight kills, the comely Gonzaga also uncorked a pair of services aces and seven non-scoring but excellent digs while providing back on their net defense composed of Bautista and skipper Joanne Bunag.
“I’m just trying to contribute in every way I can to help the team,” said Gonzaga.
Ma. Theresa Iratay, meanwhile, anchored Army’s offense by coming through with 21 of the team’s 35 excellent sets, nearly doubling Navy’s measly 12-set effort.
Bunag and Genie Sabas finished with eight hits apiece while Mary Jean Balse, also a former MVP, saw action just in the opening set and scored two points as coach Rico de Guzman found no need for her to join the onslaught of the Lady Sailors.
Navy, which also lost badly, 12-25, 12-25, 16-25, to Cagayan, continued to struggle with Michelle Laborte scoring nine hits and Rose Prochina adding six and Cecille Cruzada and Zenaida Chavez chipped in four apiece.
