MARAWI CITY: The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) kicked off on Monday its weeklong regional athletic meet hosted for the first time by this city. Some 6,000 athletes, coaches and educational officials from ten school divisions of the autonomous region began the events with a parade from the center of Marawi to the Mindanao State University complex. Delegates of the ARMM Athletic Association from the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and the city of Lamitan, including this host city showcased their respective teams amid sporadic ran showers. Gov. Mujiv Hataman of ARMM said the annual event “has helped nurture the overall development of the region’s best and young athletes [and]also fostered understanding and camaraderie.” Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman, ARMM vice-governor, and lawyer Jamar Kulayan, ARMM education secretary marked the declaration and opening of the event with the ceremonial banging of the agong (gong) and the releasing of doves.
