Top Rank boss Bob Arum is eyeing to bring new World boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. and reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in one fight night in Macau possibly in November.
“There’s a possibility that me and Manny [Pacquiao] will fight in one fight card since both of us will fight in November and most likely at the same place, according to Arum,” Donaire told reporters in a press conference on Monday after his bout with South African Simpiwe Vetyeka in Macau.
Pacquiao is also scheduled to fight in November against a yet to be determined foe after his impressive unanimous decision win against erstwhile unbeaten American Timothy Bradley on April 12, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Donaire scored a technical decision victory against Vetyeka on Saturday, improving his record to 33-2 win-loss with 21 knockouts. All three judges scored the bout 49-46 in his favor. Donaire got 11 stitches for the cut in his left eye from Vetyeka’s headbutt in the first round. The WBA officials halted the match in the fourth round when Donaire told the referee that he could no longer see. The Filipino pug was declared the winner despite his injuries.
“I can’t say that he’s a dirty fighter despite the headbutt and elbows I took from him. It’s maybe his style which is dirty and I fought him with one-eye open and it’s very hard,” said Donaire. “I will be okay I think in two months, but I will rest my wound for three months to make it sure.”
Donaire wants a rematch against the South African.
“I like to win convincingly that’s why I don’t like to stop the fight in the third round although I could not see some of his punches. I also wanted to give him [Vetyeka] a rematch and that’s where I stand now, but everything will still depend on my promoter if he’s going to receive a rematch.”
“Me and Vetyeka need to do this all over again, because he is an amazing fighter, and I want to congratulate him for being an amazing fighter,” he said. “Hopefully, we can get an amazing fight for you guys all over again.”
Vetyeka welcomed Donaire’s invitation and Arum, who promoted the fight, said they would do the rematch “as soon as possible.”
