Ateneo de Manila University demolished National University (NU), 5-0, to get back on track in Ang Liga first division on Monday at the San Beda College Football Field in Manila.

After losing to University of Santo Tomas (UST), 2-1, in their previous outing, the Blue Eagles were able to return to the winning column with a convincing thumping of the Bulldogs.

Ateneo relied on the scoring prowess of veteran Julian Roxas, who posted two goals, to dispatch their University Athletic Association of the Philippines rivals.

Midfielder Roxas ignited Ateneo’s offensive with an early strike in the sixth minute followed by another successful strike in the 39th minute to complete his brace.

The Bulldogs were unlucky to concede a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick converted by Ateneo sophomore striker Javie Gayoso in the 34th to extend their lead to 3-0 at halftime.

Two more goals were added by the Blue Eagles in the second half courtesy of Samuel Lim in the 62nd minute and Carlo Liay in the first minute of added time.

NU fought hard in the remaining minutes of the match but was unable to pierce through the defense of the Ateneans.

Ateneo improved its record to two wins, one draw and one loss while NU was handed their first loss together with two draws and one victory.

San Beda also registered its second win in the collegiate pre-season tournament at the expense of the UST Growling Tigers, 2-1, in division one.

Nimrod Balabat carried the Red Lions with twin goals in the 76th and 80th minutes while Conrad Dimacali sank the only goal for UST in the 82nd.

Meanwhile, the reserve teams of University of the Philippines (UP) and Far Eastern University (FEU) conquered separate foes in the second division matches.

UP Team B defeated Don Bosco Technical College, 2-1, through Migui Blanco’s two goals while FEU Team B dominated the UST reserves, 6-1.
