Ateneo clips UE, nears finals slot


DEFENDING champion Ateneo De Manila University bucked a sluggish third set to sweep University of the East (UE), 25-22, 25-17, 26-24, to stay unbeaten in 13 games in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

After absorbing a 3-15 deficit in the third set, the Lady Eagles unleashed a devastating rally to seize the lead late in third set and complete the sweep. They are one game away of earning an outright championship berth.

Alyssa Valdez led the Lady Eagles with 14 points while Amy Ahomiro and Jorella Marie De Jesus added 10 points each.

The Lady Red Warriors dropped to 0-13 record.

In the second game, De La Salle University beat Adamson University, 25-13, 25-15, 25-17, to earn its 12th win.

In the men’s division, Adamson University defeated University of the Philippines (UP), 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, behind Michael Sudaria’s 17 points and Bryan Saraza’s 16 points to improve to 10-3 win-loss record.

UP fell to 4-8 record.

National University (NU) tripped winless UE, 25-12, 25-17, 25-20, for its ninth win in 13 games. Edwin Tolentino topscored for NU with 15 points.
