Ateneo collides against La Salle in deciding Game 3

Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University will be disputing the crown in Game 3 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball best-of-three championship series today at the Araneta Coliseum.

The rubber match will be at 3:30 p.m.

La Salle won in Game 1 via an aggressive 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 win before Ateneo posted a thrilling 18-25, 26-28, 25-17, 25-16, 15-11 come-from-behind win in Game 2 to level the series.

“It’s not yet over. We still have this Game 3 and we need to get this. We need to forget what happened in Game 1 and Game 2. Our focus right now is to get this one,” said Ateneo team captain Alyssa Valdez, winner of three-straight Most Valuable Player awards.


Valdez, who also claimed the Best Server and Best Scorer plums, sizzled in Game 2 as she nailed 34 points, 32 from the attack line.

Besides Valdez, the Lady Eagles will be banking on open hitter Jhoana Maraguinot, middle blockers Bea De Leon and Amy Ahomiro, who combined for 36 points the last time our, as well as setter Jia Morado and libero Gizelle Tan.

Morado had 70 excellent sets and Tan got 23 receptions and 19 digs.

“I really admire my teammates. La Salle will always be La Salle. They’ll [La Salle] fight for sure and we need to fight back,” added the 22-year-old Valdez.

On the other hand, the Lady Spikers will be going all-out to reclaim the title.

Veterans Kim Fajardo, Mika Reyes and Ara Galang are expected to deliver for La Salle along with prolific sophomores Kim Dy and Mary Joy Baron, and defensive gem Dawn
Macandili, who bagged the Best Digger and Best Receiver awards.

Ateneo guns for a three-peat while La Salle eyes its ninth crown.

The last time La Salle won a title was in Season 75 in 2013.
