Ateneo eyes 12th win in UAAP volleyball

Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University guns for its 12th straight victory when it faces University of Santo Tomas (UST) today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Ateneo-UST game is at 4 p.m. after the tussle between last year’s runner-up De La Salle University and winless University of the East (UE) at 2 p.m.

Ateneo holds the solo lead with a perfect 11-0 card—three wins away from completing a sweep of the elimination round and an automatic slot to the finals that goes with it. After UST, the Lady Eagles will then battle againts UE on February 15 and La Salle on February 18.

La Salle is in second with 10-1 followed by UST (5-6), Adamson University (5-6), National University (5-6), University of the Philippines (4-7), Far Eastern University (4-7) and already eliminated UE (0-11).

“For us in the team, we think that coach Tai [Bundit] is doing his job [to map out plans], and [for our part]we need to execute that plan. We need to meet halfway to have a better result every game,” said reining Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez after their 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 win over Far Eastern University (FEU) last week.

On the other hand, UST is coming off a 21-25, 9-25, 18-25 straight-set loss to La Salle.

Veterans Pam Lastimosa, Carmela Tunay and Jessey de Leon as well as rookie EJ Laure and Ria Meneses need a solid game against the defending champions.
