Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University will be gunning for its sixth-straight win when it battles winless University of the East in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball today at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Ateneo-UE match is set at 2 p.m. followed by the tussle between Far Eastern University (FEU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) at 4 p.m.
Ateneo is currently second with a 5-0 card behind former titlist De La Salle University which also holds a clean 6-0 mark. FEU, National University and Adamson University are in a three-way tie for third with 3-3 each followed by University of the Philippines (UP) with 3-4 and UE with 0-6.
The Lady Eagles, who recently bagged a bronze medal in the Asean University Games in Indonesia, had a rusty start this year following their hard-earned 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11 over the Lady Maroons on Sunday.
“They [UP] really played very well in that game. We were out of focus because of the holidays. We’re looking forward to a better game this time [against UE],” said Ateneo team captain and reigning Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez.
Besides Valdez, Ateneo is also expected to draw huge games from rookie Bea De Leon, Ella De Jesus, Michelle Morente, Amy Ahomiro, Julia Morado and Denden Lazaro.
The Lady Warriors, for their part, are raring to nail their first win this season.
Open-hitter Shaya Adorador and veteran middle spiker Leuseht Dawis must bring their A-game along with Jasmine Alcayde, Roselle Baliton and playmaker Abigail Ponon.
