Ateneo eyes ninth win in UAAP women’s volley

Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University guns for its ninth straight win when it faces Adamson University today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Ateneo-Adamson match is at 4 p.m. while University of Santo Tomas (UST) takes on National University (NU) at 2 p.m.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez will banner the Lady Eagles along with Amy Ahomiro, Bea De Leon, Ella De Jesus, Denden Lazaro and Julia Morado.

“Adamson, for sure, will put up a good fight. But coach Tai [Bundit] has a plan and I hope it would work,” said Valdez.

Ateneo holds the solo lead with a clean 8-0 mark followed by former titlist De La Salle University (8-1), NU (4-4), University of the Philippines (4-5), Far Eastern University (4-5), UST (3-5), Adamson (3-5) and University of the East (0-9).

Adamson wants to bounce back from its 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-25 loss to UST on Sunday to keep its Final Four bid alive.

“We’re still optimistic despite our [bad]games. We just need to adjust, it’s not yet over, we need to recover easily to get back on track,” said Adamson mentor Sherwin Meneses, who will be banking on utility spiker Mylene Paat and open hitter Amanda Villanueva.

Team captain Faye Guevara, Jessica Galanza and Erica Alkuino must also step up to put up a good fight against the defending champions.
