ATENEO De Manila University soundly beat University of the East (UE), 25-7, 25-17, 25-8, to post its sixth straight win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Alyssa Valdez finished with 23 points with two blocks, while Amy Ahomiro and Michelle Morente made 10 points apiece for the Lady Blue Eagles. Ateneo will face De La Salle University today at the end of the elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“We are preparing every game, we are doing it one game at a time. Two games in a weekend, it’s different this time Hopefully, we have a good advantage. What I can say is we are really working hard,” said Valdez, the reigning MVP.
Like Ateneo, unbeaten La Salle also has a 6-0 unblemished slate.
Ateneo survived a grueling five-setter against University of the Philippines last Sunday.
“We have to improve a lot of things,” said Valdez. “Basically, we have to be consistent in every aspect. At the end of the day, we need to be on the same page. We have to keep our teamwork.”
Elaine Juanillo led the Lady Warriors with five points.
University of the East now has 0-7 win-loss record at the end of first round.
In the men’s division, Mark Alfafara finished with 20 points as University of Santo Tomas routed De La Salle University, 25-15, 25-14, 25-12, at the end of the first round. UST now has a 5-2 record.
University of the Philippines’ record improved to 3-4 by winning over UE, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 15-5, behind Wendel Miguel’s 24 points and four digs. JOSEF T. RAMOS
