Ateneo, La Salle eye 4th win in UAAP women’s volleyball

Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University and former titlist De La Salle University gun for win No. 4 when they face separate foes today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Ateneo battles University of Santo Tomas (UST) at 4 p.m. while La Salle takes on University of the Philippines (UP) at 2 p.m.

The Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers are sharing the top spot with identical 3-0 followed by Far Eastern University (2-1). UST and UP are in a four-way tie for fourth with Adamson University and National University with 1-2 each. University of the East remains winless in three games.

All of Ateneo’s victories were won in straight sets including its 25-15, 25-16, 25-17 demolition of the Lady Tamaraws last week with reigning Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez, the league’s leading spiker, leading the squad.

Besides Valdez, Ateneo will be banking on Amy Ahomiro, Ella De Jesus, Michelle Morente, setter Julia Morado and libero Denden Lazaro.

UST, on the other hand, absorbed a painful 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 17-25 loss to UP on Sunday.

In that game, rookie Annajie Laure scored 19 points and skipper Pamela Lastimosa added 13 markers but veterans Carmela Tunay and Jessey De Leon were limited to six and seven, respectively.

Meanwhile, after their game against UST, the Lady Eagles are set to leave for Palembang, Indonesia on Sunday to represent the country in the Asean University Games beginning on December 9.
