Ateneo de Manila University reigned supreme in the men’s division while De La Salle University got its first title in the women’s category of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 76 judo tournament held at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan, Quezon City.
Matt Jao and Anjo Gumila led the Blue Eagles as they dominated the men’s +100-kg and -90-kg, respectively. Jao was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) while his teammate Ralph Sapi took the Rookie of the Year award.
Overall, Ateneo has 47 points on two golds, three silvers and six bronzes, beating University of the Philippines (35 points), La Salle (32) and last season’s titlist University of Santo Tomas (19).
La Salle also made some waves by collecting a total of 42 points coming from its three-gold, two-silver, one-bronze medal haul.
Nikki More (-57 kg), Justine Pongase (+78 kgs) and Marjorie Santiago (-63 kgs) delivered the gold medals for the Lady Archer. More copped the MVP plum while Loreli Tolentino of UST got the Rookie of the Year plum.
Ateneo and University of the East (UE) finished in a two-way tie for second with 29 points each. But the Lady Eagles occupied the No. 2 spot because of superior quotient points that the Lady Warriors, who settled for third.
UST ended up fourth with 25 points.
In the juniors division, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets swept all the seven gold medals at stake to claim the overall title. They scored an impressive 91-point showing.
La Salle-Zobel (19) and last season’s champion UST (15), landed second and third, respectively.
Ateneo’s Rean Gonzales bagged the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards.
