CEBU CITY: Defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles snapped the two-game winning streak of the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers with a 73-59 beating on the last day of the semifinal round to clinch a slot into the best-of-three championship series for the high school division title of the 2016 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
In the main game, the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters defeated Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 61-45, to clinch the second finals slot.
UC’s win created a three-way log jam for the two finals slots.
However, UV was dragged down as they had the lowest point differential of -9, UC had zero and SHS-AdC with +9.
UC leaned on the heroics of the diminutive guard Gelmart Umpad who scored seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter as Luigi Gabisan scored the game-high 20 points, while no CEC player scored double figure with only James Tempra leading their way with nine points.
This will be a rematch of last year’s championship.
Jed Colonia striked early for the Magis Eagles as he scored nine points to ignite a well-oiled offense in the first quarter.
Then, SHS-AdC’s offense clipped UV’s production to just nine points in the second quarter to create a 43-21 gap at the halftime break.
UV failed to get its game going as Colonia got his teammates involved in scoring to make sure they will win the game.
Colonia scored the game high 23 points and Errol Pastor added 12 while Froiland Maglasang lead UV scorers with 18 points and Jancork Cabahug added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
