Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University posted a 7-3 victory over De La Salle University in Game 1 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 baseball best-of-three championship showdown on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
The Blue Eagles are just a win away of claiming their third straight title.
The Game 2 is set on March 12 at 11 a.m. at the same venue.
La Salle and Ateneo made it to the finals after topping the elimination round. The Green Batters finished the eliminations with an 8-2 mark while the Blue Eagles had 7-3 card to claim the second seat in the finals.
Meanwhile, National University (NU) is leading the overall medal tally with six golds and one silver while University of Santo Tomas is in second with five golds, five silvers and six bronzes and La Salle in third with three golds, six silvers and four bronzes.
University of the Philippines has three golds, four silvers and three for fourth followed by Ateneo with two golds, three silvers and two bronzes, Far Easten University with two golds, three silvers and two bronzes, University of the East with two golds, one silver and three bronzes and Adamson University with one silver and two bronzes.
NU won golds in men and women’s basketball, men and women’s tennis, men’s badminton, and men’s beach volleyball. UST topped the women’s beach volleyball, women’s athletics, men’s tae kwon do, and men and women’s judo.
