Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University nailed a hard-earned 25-21, 17-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-10 win over Adamson University to stay unbeaten in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) Alyssa Valdez posted a season-high 30-point showing to tow the Lady Eagles to their ninth straight victory.
The Lady Falcons absorbed their sixth loss in nine outings.
Earlier, University of Santo Tomas (UST) clobbered National University (NU), 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, to stay alive in the Final Four race.
Rookie Cherry Ann Rondina delivered 15 points for UST while veterans Pamela Lastimosa and Carmela Tunay backed her up with eight points apiece.
The Tigresses joined the Lady Bulldogs, University of the Philippines and Far Eastern University (FEU) in a four-way tie for the No. 3 spot with 4-5 each.
Season 76 Rookie of the Year awardee Jaja Santiago got 14 points as former Best Spiker Myla Pablo had a measly seven-point output for the Lady Bulldogs.
In the men’s division, last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University overpowered University of the East, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24, with reigning MVP Marck Espejo leading the Blue Eagles with 24 points on 17 attacks, four blocks and three aces.
UST also joined the celebration by whipping FEU, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22, in the other match.
Mark Gil Alfafara, the leading scorer in the league, posted 14 points while Romnick Rico added 13 for the Growling Tigers. EMIL C. NOGUERA
