ATENEO De Manila University pulled off a come-from-behind 68-64 win against Far Eastern University (FEU) in overtime in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Guard Kiefer Ravena posted 23 points plus five rebounds and five assists, Chris Newsome finished with 13 points, 16 boards with four steals while Fonso Gotladera had nine points and seven rebounds for the Blue Eagles.
“It’s partly mental than physical. We overcame that huge deficit and we just could not allow ourselves to lose,” said Ravena, who made the most important shots in crunch time despite a terrible 5-of-28 shooting in the field.
The Blue Eagles, with the triumph, notched their 11th win against three losses to secure the No. 1 spot and the first twice-to-beat edge.
The Tamaraws could have won the game in regulation time but Mike Tolomia failed to sink both free throws with 2.2 seconds left in the fourth period. Ravena threw an air ball and the game went to overtime.
“This is the kind of level that we wanted to play in a playoff game,” Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol told reporters during post game interview. “We never gave up and we showed our true character.”
After being down by 19 points in the first three quarters, the Blue Eagles outscored the Tamaraws in the last period, 33-14, with Ravena scoring 12 points including the game-tying free throws at 59-all down to 20 seconds.
Ateneo outscored FEU in the last 15 minutes 42-19.
Marc Belo led FEU with 16 points and eight rebounds while Roger Pogoy had 15 points.
The Tamaraws’ win-loss record dropped to 10-4.
