BUHAY Partylist Representative Lito Atienza chided the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for its failure to light up the Metro’s road tunnels. “We have about 12 tunnels in Metro Manila most of which are poorly lit until now considering that hundreds of thousands of motorists pass thru them everyday. We are here discussing disaster preparedness and yet the basic task of lighting up the tunnels for the safety of our motorists could not be addressed. This is clearly a disaster waiting to happen,” Atienza said. Atienza asked MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino to immediately address this matter, adding that the tunnel nearest the House of Representatives is the only one that is well-lit. Tolentino said the Department of Public Works and Highways is in charge of lighting up tunnels. “That is clearly passing the buck. It does not matter if it is the DPWH or any other government agency’s fault. Tama na ang sisihan and start taking charge. If you can request money from the Road Board to finance the plants lining the walls of the tunnels, I don’t see any reason why you can’t fund the lights of the tunnels,” Atienza added.
