BUHAY party-list Rep. Lito Atienza on Tuesday called on Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Alan Purisima to resign if they cannot address the worsening peace and order situation in the country.
“If you cannot handle your jobs, become private citizens yourselves. Kung hindi mo kaya ang trabaho mo, magmaneho ka na lang ng taxi para mapasyal mo ang dapat mo ipasyal,” Atienza said, in an apparent swipe at Roxas who reportedly drove Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla to a meeting with the President.
In his privileged speech, Atienza cited the rising number of killings such as the assassination of a mayor at the airport, the rape-slay of children in Cavite province and Manila, and the existence of drug dens in Batangas province and The Fort in Taguig City.
Atienza criticized Roxas for allowing private blue guards to handle the security of actor Vhong Navarro.
“Bakit blue guards ang magbabantay kay Vhong, whereas dapat our very own policemen should secure him? Kung hindi kaya ng pulis na bantayan si Vhong Navarro, paano pa yung ordinary citizens?” he asked.
“The police are no longer working to protect our safety and security but their own agenda. Even if we impose a double death penalty, the criminals will still get away if the police do not do their jobs effectively,” Atienza added.
He said the PNP should “use all its resources in crime prevention and putting criminals in jail and if necessary augment the police force and provide better training.”
Ret. general and now Pangasinan Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil supported Atienza’s stance, saying the PNP modernization must be given utmost priority.
Atienza suggested that PNP officials consult bemedaled police officers who are now members of the House of Representatives like Bataoil, party-list Rep. Samuel Pagdila, and Antipolo Rep.Romeo Acop to improve the efficiency of the police force.
