audi-a8-update20130902SYSTEMATIC lightweight construction, excellent comfort and a broad portfolio of high-end technologies are what Audi’s updated flagship A8 sedan has been crammed with, according to the carmaker. It added that the car’s engine choices have been made even more powerful and efficient, while new assistance systems and the Matrix LED headlights raise the A8’s posh factor.

Scheduled for release in German showrooms in November, with other markets to follow shortly, the latest A8 places Audi among the innovation leaders in the luxury segment, the carmaker said, noting that a key strength of its big sedan is its lightweight construction. The A8 3.0 TFSI weighs only 1,830 kilograms, which makes it the lightest full-size sedan with all-wheel drive. Credit here goes to a body made almost entirely of aluminum, as well as the Audi Space Frame design that weighs only 231 kilograms.

The latest A8 received some design tweaks. Its hood, single-frame grille and front bumper are more sculptured and the lower edge of the headlights is now straight. LED headlights are standard in all models with a V8 engine while the new Matrix LED units are optional. The new headlights feature intelligent cornering lights, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals. They also use predictive route data from the navigation system to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation.

Audi said the updated A8 comes with two gasoline and two diesel engines. These are the supercharged 3.0 TFSI with 310 horsepower; the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with 435 horsepower; the highly efficient 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 258 horsepower; and the extremely high-torque 4.2 TDI clean diesel that produces 385 horsepower and 850 Newton-meter.

When paired with its quattro all-wheel drive system, Audi said the 4.0 TFSI now shoots the A8 from rest to 100kph in 4.5 seconds.

Audi said it also fitted the A8 with its cylinder-on-demand system that deactivates four of the engine’s eight cylinders during light-load conditions. The latest car comes standard with a fast and smooth-shifting eight-speed tiptronic transmission, which can be paired to an optional sport rear differential. Adaptive air suspension with adaptive damping, electromechanical power steering that varies boost depending on speed, and carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs can be specified, too. Another option are special 20-inch aluminum wheels.
