AUSTRALIAN MINISTERS IN INDONESIA FOR BOATPEOPLE TALKS

0

JAKARTA: Australian ministers participated in regional talks on people-smuggling in Indonesia Tuesday as an asylum-seeker boat carrying 105 people was sinking off Christmas Island, highlighting the urgency of stemming the flood of would-be refugees. Less than three weeks before Australians go to the polls, Foreign Minister Bob Carr and Immigration Minister Tony Burke met ministers and senior officials from 13 other countries in Jakarta in a fresh bid to tackle an issue that will loom large at the election. The talks come after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s Labor party last month unveiled a new policy that will see boatpeople arriving in Australia sent to Papua New Guinea for processing and resettlement even if they are genuine refugees.
